আমি একদিনও না দেখিলাম তারে,
আমার বাড়ির কাছে আরশিনগর,
সেথা এক পরশী বসত করে।
গেরাম বেড়ে অগাধ পানি,
নাই কিনারা নাই তরণী,
আমি বাঞ্ছা করি দেখব তারে,
কেমনে সেথা যাই রে।
কী বলব সেই পরশীর কথা,
তার হস্ত পদ স্কন্ধ মাথা নাই রে,
সে ক্ষণেক থাকে শূন্যের পরে,
ক্ষণেক ভাসে নীরে।
সে পরশী যদি আমায় ছুঁতো,
আমার যম-যাতনা সকল যেতো দূরে,
সে আর লালন একখানে রয়,
তবু লক্ষ যোজন ফাঁক রে।

Ami ekdin-o na dekhilam tare,
Amar barir kache arshinogor,
Setha ek porshi boshot kore.
Geram bere ogadh pani,
Nai kinara nai toroni,
Ami bancha kori dekhbo tare,

Not for a single day have I glimpsed him,
Yet right beside my home lies the Mirror City,
Where a mystical neighbor resides.
Endless waters encircle the village,
There is no shore, nor any boat;
I yearn with all my heart to behold him,
Yet how shall I cross over?
How shall I describe that neighbor?
He has neither hand, nor foot, nor shoulder, nor head;
In one instant he hovers in the void,
In the next he drifts upon the waters.
If only that neighbor would touch me,
All my mortal torment would dissolve away;
He and Lalon dwell in the very same place,
Yet countless millions of leagues lie between them.

A masterwork of Lalon's mystical epistemology. 'Arshinogor' (the City of Mirrors) represents pure consciousness; the neighbor is the indwelling Divine Presence who is closer than one's jugular vein yet hidden by the waters of worldly illusion.
