খাঁচার ভিতর অচিন পাখি কেমনে আসে যায়,
তারে ধরতে পারলে মন-বেড়ি দিতাম পাখির পায়।
আট কুঠুরি নয় দরজা আঁটা,
মধ্যে মধ্যে ঝরকা কাটা,
তার উপরে সদর কোঠা আয়না-মহল তায়।
কপালে তার লালন বলে,
মন তুই পাখি পাবি কোথা রে?
খাঁচা ভেঙে পাখি যখন উড়াল দেবে হায়,
তখন বুঝবি খাঁচার মূল্য কতখানি হায়।
খাঁচার ভিতর অচিন পাখি কেমনে আসে যায়,
তারে ধরতে পারলে মন-বেড়ি দিতাম পাখির পায়।

Khachar bhitor ochin pakhi kemne ashe jaay,
Tare dhorte parle mon-beri ditam pakhir paay.
Aat kuthuri noy dorja aata,
Modhye modhye jhorka kaata,
Taar upore shodor kotha ayna-mohol taay.

If only I could catch it, I would fasten the shackle of my mind to its feet.
Eight chambers, nine gates fastened tight,
With latticed windows carved between,
And perched above them all, the hall of mirrors where it resides.
Lalon says, O foolish mind,
Where will you seek that bird when the cage crumbles
And the unknown visitor flies away into the boundless sky?
How does that unknown bird come and go inside the cage?
